What are my AIA health fund options?

Hospital policies are an important part of health cover. They ensure you get the required treatment in either a public or private hospital across Australia in the unfortunate event that you may need it. Hospital cover also helps pay for hospital-related costs like specialist fees.

AIA health insurance offers a range of plans that include hospital and/or extras cover. Waiting periods are also waived if you switch from an equivalent or lower level of cover, meaning you don’t have to wait to get the expert care you need. Every AIA Australia private health insurance policy also includes emergency ambulance transport and you are also free to choose your own doctor and/or surgeon.

The amount you pay for hospital and/or extras cover, depends on a range of factors including your age, your income, where you live and your family circumstances (whether you’re single, married, have a family or are a single parent). It is also affected by the Australian Government Rebate (AGR). This is an amount the Government contributes towards the cost of your private health insurance, which varies depending on your annual taxable income.

For example, if you have a partner and children, both adults are under 65 years of age, your combined income is between $180,001 – $210,000 and you are after simple cover for the basics, options to consider include:

  • Basic Hospital Accident & Lite Extras – This is cover that has Basic Hospital and Low Extras. The hospital excess you will pay is $500. You are covered for ambulance and accidental injury, however, palliative care, rehabilitation and hospital psychiatric services are restricted. Extras include physio, optical and general dental.
  • Basic Plus Hospital Starter & Healthy Saver Extras – This is Basic Hospital and Medium Extras cover. The hospital excess you will pay is $750. You are covered for ambulance, dental surgery, accidental injury, joint reconstructions, hernia, appendix and tonsils and adenoids and grommets. Restrictions are the same as above.
  • Bronze Hospital Essential & Lite Extras – This cover offers affordable private hospital cover for accidents and a range of common procedures. The hospital excess you will pay is $750. Extras include those in the Basic Plus Hospital Starter & Healthy Saver Extras cover as well as bone, joint and muscle, brain and nervous system, breast surgery (medically necessary), chemotherapy, radiotherapy and immunotherapy for cancer, diabetes management excluding insulin pumps, digestive system, ear, nose and throat, eye (not cataracts), gastrointestinal, endoscopy, gynaecology, kidney and bladder, male reproductive, miscarriage and termination of pregnancy, pain management and skin. Restrictions are the same as above.
  • Bronze Hospital Essential & Standard Extras – This cover is similar to the Bronze Hospital Essential & Lite Extras cover, however it also provides cover for a range of additional extras. The hospital excess you will pay is $750.

This is just one example of cover AIA offers. They also offer everyday cover for common services, extended cover for added peace of mind, entry cover for tax purposes, and birth-related services for a growing family. If your circumstances differ from the example above and you’d like to consider AIA health insurance, give us a call and we can advise what other health fund policies they have that may suit your particular circumstances.

What are the waiting periods with AIA health insurance cover?

For pre-existing conditions, it is 12 months, for rehabilitation, palliative care, hospital psychiatric treatments and all other hospital admissions it is two months and for accidents and emergency ambulance services it is one day.

How many hospital agreements does AIA Australia have in my state?

The benefit amount your fund pays you for hospital services depends not only on the type of cover you buy, but also whether your fund has an agreement with the hospital where you will be treated. When you take out AIA private health insurance you will discover that it has a number of hospital agreements across Australia. In terms of private hospitals, there are six in Canberra, 89 in New South Wales, two in the Northern Territory, 51 in Queensland, 26 in South Australia, eight in Tasmania, 74 in Victoria and 19 in Western Australia. In terms of public hospitals, most of them don’t have agreements with specific private health insurance funds, so they are generally treated as though they are “agreement” hospitals.

Does AIA health insurance offer different types of cover?

Yes. There are different types of policies for singles, couples, families and single parents.

How do I switch to AIA Australia?

As with most policies, when you switch providers your previous fund is required to send a transfer certificate within 14 days under the Private Health Insurance Act. This includes information about your previous cover, including waiting periods and your claims history. As soon as we receive this, you can start claiming!

Plus, if you’re transferring to a policy that has an equivalent or lower level of benefits, you won’t have to re-serve any waiting periods on the services covered with your previous fund. They will also recognise partially served waiting periods, so even if you’ve only served three months of a 12-month waiting period, they’ll ensure the three months still count when you transfer to them.

Do I need private health insurance?

Not everyone has private health insurance, however it does have a range of benefits including:

  • No waiting. If you need to go to hospital and don’t have health insurance, you may face waiting weeks or even months for a public hospital bed. If you choose to go into a private hospital, you will probably face costly medical fees.
  • The treatment you want. Having private health insurance gives you the freedom to see the specialists you want and also have your own hospital room.
  • Ambulance services. These are free as part of your health insurance package unless you live in Queensland or Tasmania. Otherwise you will need to pay for them in the event of an emergency.
  • Cost savings. These include on extras services like eye, dental and physio (and that’s just at the basic level of cover, with higher levels you’ll get a lot more). It also includes savings on loadings and tax-related items like the Lifetime Healthcare Cover loading, the Medicare levy surcharge (including gap cover) and the Australian Government Rebate which means lower insurance premiums.
