What makes nib different?

nib strives to offer all Australians and New Zealanders the right level of healthcare for their needs at a competitive price. Their mission is “to help people access and afford world-class healthcare when and where needed.”

Not only does the organisation service Australian and New Zealand residents, but nib also provides health insurance to more than 190,000 visa-compliant international students and workers in Australia and expats working and studying abroad. In 2007, it was the first private health insurance fund to list on the Australian Securities Exchange.

Why do millions of Australians entrust their healthcare to nib?

  • nib has almost 70 years’ experience insuring those living in Australia and New Zealand, visa-compliant international students and workers in Australia, and expats working and studying abroad.
  • With a variety of private health insurance plans, cover can be tailored to individual needs and budgets. Plans are easy to understand and claim on, and the company prides itself on value for money, product innovation and top-notch customer service.
  • With nib, all waiting periods that have been served with a previous fund are waived if the user is switching from an existing health insurance fund of an equivalent or lower level of cover.
  • Their Whitecoat initiative, launched in 2013, is one of Australia’s largest online directories of healthcare professionals. It lets users rate, review and recommend healthcare providers.
  • They have agreements with over 70 per cent of the private hospitals in Australia, and their hospital cover includes extra protection with their Accidental Injury Benefit initiative.
  • Their extras cover includes up to 60 per cent back on each visit to providers up to your annual limit — including dental, optical and physiotherapy — with even their basic Core Extras cover.

What are my nib hospital cover options?

As part of your private health insurance, hospital cover gives you peace of mind knowing you can get the treatment you need at both a public and private hospital across Australia. Hospital cover also assists with paying hospital-related costs such as the cost of staying in hospital and specialist fees.

nib offers five hospital cover plans from their entry-level Basic Essential Hospital Plus to their top-level Gold Top Hospital cover, which includes weight loss surgery and pregnancy, birth and hospital psychiatric services. All levels of hospital cover include unlimited emergency ambulance cover, excluding members who are covered by state ambulance schemes (in Queensland and Tasmania).

nib also offers extra protection against the unexpected with their Accidental Injury Benefit. If you’re a nib member on an eligible hospital cover and you seek treatment within 72 hours of an accident with your GP or at a hospital emergency department, you’ll receive benefits in line with their top hospital cover for the following 90 days. nib hospital cover options include:

  • Basic Essential Hospital Plus: Cover for the basics, including accidental injury and specific hospital services like dental, gynaecology, hernia and appendix, joint reconstructions and gastrointestinal endoscopy. This is the cheapest way to avoid paying the Medicare levy surcharge.
  • Bronze Hospital Plus: The basics, as well as an additional selection of common procedures including kidney and bladder, ear, nose and throat, lung and chest, and bone, joint and muscle.
  • Silver Hospital: More than the basics without paying for things you’re less likely to need, including costly age-related services. These include the above but also heart and vascular system and back, neck and spine.
  • Silver Advantage Hospital Plus: A higher level of hospital cover that includes the above as well as cataracts, rehabilitation and joint replacements. A higher level of hospital cover that includes the above as well as cataracts, rehabilitation and joint replacements.
  • Gold Top Hospital: This is the highest level of hospital cover that covers you for everything, which includes the above plus pregnancy and birth, weight loss surgery and hospital psychiatric services. There is also an option to choose either a $250, $500 or $750 excess.

Which private hospitals does nib have an agreement with?

As with all private health insurance providers, receiving the full benefit from your hospital cover with nib depends on whether you’ve gone to one of the private hospitals your insurer has an agreement with. However, the great news is that nib has agreements with over 70 per cent of the private hospitals in Australia and day and private hospitals in every state to give you more flexibility.

What are my nib extras cover options?

Extras cover is a great way to lower your out-of-pocket costs for a range of common health complaints. You can choose from nib’s basic Core Extras cover to their Top Extras cover that offers 75 per cent back on each visit to a range of health professionals. nib extras cover options include:

  • Core Extras: Cover for the essentials — including dental, optical and physiotherapy — with up to 60 per cent back on each visit, up to your annual limit.
  • Core Extras Boost: The same as Core Extras cover, but with higher annual limits.
  • Core and Wellbeing Extras: This extras cover offers additional services on top of those offered in Core Extras cover, including psychology, physiotherapy, remedial massage and chiropractic/osteopathy.
  • Top Extras: An extras cover plan that offers an extensive range of services with higher annual limits, 75 per cent back on each visit up to your annual limit, plus orthodontia and natural therapies.

Does nib offer different types of cover?

The simple answer? Of course! And each type offers a range of benefits that suit your lifestyle and circumstances.

  • Singles cover. Benefits include a 10 per cent discount off hospital cover premiums for those aged between 18 and 29 and tax savings if you have a taxable income of over $90,000.
  • Couples cover. Benefits include tax savings if the two of you have a combined taxable income of over $180,000.
  • Family and single parents cover. Benefits include tax savings if you have a combined income of over $180,000 and a “one price to cover all” policy, which means whether you have one child or five, the cost of your cover won’t change. Plus, kids are covered up to age 25 if unmarried and in full-time study.

How do I switch to nib?

Under the Private Health Insurance Act, when you switch to nib, your previous fund is required to send a transfer certificate within 14 days. The transfer certificate outlines details of your previous cover, including the type of cover you had, your claims history and any waiting periods you’ve served. You can start claiming on services that you’re eligible for as soon as we receive this certificate.

If you’re transferring to a policy that has an equivalent or lower level of benefits, you won’t have to re-serve any waiting periods on the services covered with your previous fund. They will also recognise partially served waiting periods, so even if you’ve only served three months of a 12-month waiting period, they will ensure that the three months still count when you transfer to them.

Making a claim with nib

nib strives to make it as easy as possible to claim on your health cover by providing a number of different claiming methods. Once you’ve made an eligible purchase or received medical treatment, you can make a nib claim in a number of different ways. At the counter, you may be able to swipe your nib membership card. 20,000 Australian specialist providers provide HICAPS (Health Industry Claims and Payment Service), allowing this type of claim.

You can claim on-the-go with nib’s smartphone app. Once you’ve downloaded the app and have connected to WiFi or mobile data, you just take a photo of your receipt and submit the claim for payment to your bank account within five working days.

Online, you can log into nib online services, fill in details from your receipt, enter your bank details, and receive a transfer of your benefit from nib into your bank account. Or you can ring nib and ask customer service to process a claim or visit a nib retail centre to make a claim in person.

Finally, if you’d like to claim by post, you just fill out a claim form, attach your specialist provider’s invoice and post it to nib. nib will fulfil the claim by cheque or bank transfer. When your claim is the result of a hospital visit, the hospital will usually send the bill to nib for you.

Do I really need private health insurance?

The decision to take out private health insurance is a personal one. However, some of the key benefits to holding a private health insurance policy are:

  • You’ll probably use it. In 2021, nib funded over 270,000 hospital admissions and almost 3.4 million extras visits for our members. This amounted to almost $4 million paid in claims per day.
  • You don’t have to wait. Without the right cover, wait times in the public hospital system can be weeks, if not months. If you choose to go into a private hospital, the treatment will more than likely be expensive.
  • You’ll receive the private hospital treatment you want. With the average hospital stay lasting almost five nights, nib aims to make your recovery just that little bit easier. From the privacy of your own room to having a say in which specialist you see, it gives you more choice and certainty. Private hospital cover also pays benefits towards the cost of private treatment and allows you to choose the specialists who treat you.
  • You’ll be protected in case of an emergency. Unless you live in Tasmania or Queensland, the costs associated with ambulance services are incurred by the patient (not Medicare) if they don’t have private health insurance. With nib’s hospital cover, you will have access to unlimited emergency ambulance services regardless of the cover you choose.
  • You’ll receive potential savings on loadings and tax. These include the Medicare levy surcharge, Lifetime Healthcare Cover loading and the Australian Government Rebate.
  • You’ll save on Extras services. Medicare doesn’t cover the costs of treatments like dental, eye and physiotherapy appointments (to name just a few!)

Save money, get more from extras, and get a cover that’s right for you.
